How To Add A YouTube Video to WordPress Blog Post in Under 30 Seconds!
Hey there blogger friend!
Firstly, I want to give you a virtual high five for thinking outside the box adding video to your WordPress blog post!
Video and can be such a valuable asset in creating high quality content for your readers. And, YouTube is such an awesome free resource that you can leverage to both host and share those videos.
Keep in mind that you can embed YouTube videos onto your WordPress blog regardless of whether they are from your own YouTube channel or someone else’s.
But, please never claim that someone else’s content is your own and providing a link back to the owner of the video is always a kind thing to do!
In this blog, I’m going to walk you through the best practice for adding a YouTube video to WordPress blog, and hopefully inspire you to try some new things you haven’t done before!
Why Embed Videos on Your Blog Posts?
Adding video content to your blog post is an excellent way of increasing engagement from your audience. But, if done incorrectly, it can cause slow loading speeds for your website, a bad user experience, and it can dramatically hurt your ability to rank on Google.
Rather than uploading a video directly onto WordPress, best practice is to instead upload the video onto a video hosting platform such as YouTube, Vimeo or Wistia.
We then embed the video on onto our blog post or website. In a sense, this is like streaming a movie on Netflix rather than having to wait for the entire movie to download before you can watch it.
In this blog, I’m going to walk you through how to add a YouTube video to WordPress blog post so that you can avoid slowing down your website and you can create a better user experience for your readers.
How To Add A YouTube Video to WordPress Blog Post
To add a YouTube Video to WordPress blog post, first find the video that you want to embed, open the blog post you wish to add the video to, then follow the steps below.

- Select ‘YouTube’ in WordPress to create a ‘YouTube Block’. (If it doesn’t automatically show for you, simply start typing ‘YouTube’ in the search bar and it will find it for you)
3. On YouTube, click the ‘Share’ Button below the video
4. Copy the Share Link provided and past in the URL box on WordPress.
**If you want the video to start mid-way, pause the video where you wish for it to start then click the ‘Start at’ box before copying the Share URL.
5. Once you have the URL added to WordPress, click the ‘Embed’ button and your video will appear.
Don’t Want The YouTube Branding?
There are circumstances where you may not want the YouTube branding all over the video, or the suggested videos showing.
YouTube used to allow you to have control over these settings, but it seems we now don’t have as much control as we used to.
If you want to remove the branding from the videos that appear on your WordPress blogs or pages on your website, I recommend using Vimeo.
Vimeo Basic is a free version of Vimeo that you can use to host your videos. It’s not suitable if you plan on uploading a LOT of content frequently. But, if you only upload videos occasionally this could be a good option for you.
If you find that you want/need to upload more than what is provided in the basic plan, we believe that Vimeo is the best value for money in hosting your videos without their branding all over it.
All In All
Adding a YouTube video to a WordPress blog is super simple and can be done in less than 30 seconds, but the benefits of adding video to your blog can be substantial.
